Well the simple answer, in summary, is that you should meditate whenever you find the time and as much as you can do because meditation has enormous benefits at both the physical and mental level.
The very first thing you need to remember is that not a single step taken in this direction goes waste and you will get maximum ROI on your time investment in the field of regular meditation.
Now you can begin with even 5-10 min meditation every day. The important point is that daily practice should be maintained. Ideally, it would be good if you can practice meditation first thing in the morning at least 5 to 10 min and last thing before sleep (at least 5-10min) as it will help you to disconnect with any stressful situation you might have faced during the day.
If you sleep with keeping all the stress in your mind, then the next morning when you wake up, you can’t be fresh. One of the simple example for you is to reflect on yourself, does it happen at sometimes when you wake up but still not fresh?
When you sleep with all the stress and anxiety, your subconscious mind keeps multiply those vibrations and you wake up even more tired. The simple solution for waking up every day in the morning fresh is meditation before sleep. 🙂
However I have often heard some meditation teacher saying that 10 minutes of meditation every day is good, well if you have never done meditation than yes 10 minutes every day is good, to begin with.
However, with regular practice over a period of time, you would realize you would need every day around 1 hour of practice in both morning and evening to keep your mind healthy as you do exercise to keep your body healthy.
